This photo looking toward Boston from Cambridge in the summer of 1999 shows the rebuilt bridge. The roadway and sidewalks were widened somewhat, though not as much as many advocates would have liked. There were now edge stripes on the bridge, and the width outside the stripes served as bike lanes -- except at the Cambridge end where the pre-existing median forced the travel lanes of the bridge toward the outer edges of the roadway and the shoulders tapered down to nothing. There are now a narrow cut-through in the median, and a marked crosswalk for the bike path. There are still no traffic signals to protect bicyclists and pedestrians in the crosswalk.
